Why SpeedFox

Browser-Based Accuracy

Measurements run client-side against Cloudflare's global network, using direct multi-stream chunk transfers over warm-up and measurement windows to ensure honest throughput evaluation.

Privacy First Architecture

No login required. We process only minimal parameters to explain connection performance. Your test history is stored locally in your browser.

Comprehensive Tools

Calculate download times for large files, convert bandwidth units, or learn how ping and jitter impact gaming and streaming.

What Your Results Mean

Four numbers, four different things. Here's what each one actually tells you about your connection.

Download (Mbps)

How fast data moves from the internet to you: page loads, streaming, downloads. Most home plans are sold on this number alone.

Upload (Mbps)

How fast data moves from you outward: video calls, cloud backups, live streaming. Often much lower than download on the same plan.

Ping (ms)

Round-trip delay to the server. Lower is better; under 30ms is excellent for gaming, over 100ms is noticeably laggy.

Jitter (ms)

How much your ping varies from one moment to the next. High jitter is what causes choppy calls even when average ping looks fine.

Every completed test also grades bufferbloat, how much your ping spikes specifically while the connection is under load, and links out to the full Speed Guide for a deeper explanation of any of these.

Scientific Methodology

How SpeedFox Delivers Unbiased, Accurate Results

Most online speed tests use artificial compression or partner with local ISPs to inflate numbers. SpeedFox is engineered differently.

Multi-Chunk Concurrent Transfers

Modern high-speed connections can easily saturate a single TCP stream. SpeedFox initiates multiple simultaneous HTTP chunk requests across parallel connections to accurately measure your network interface's true throughput ceiling.

TCP Slow-Start Artifact Elimination

When a download begins, the TCP congestion control window starts small and doubles gradually. SpeedFox employs a dedicated 1.5-second warm-up window to discard this ramp-up phase, ensuring calculations reflect sustained real-world speeds.

Global Anycast Edge Network

Rather than relying on a handful of sponsored datacenter servers, SpeedFox routes measurements across Cloudflare's global anycast edge spanning over 300 cities worldwide, testing against the same infrastructure that serves real internet traffic.

Loaded Latency & Bufferbloat Detection

A connection with 200 Mbps download can still feel sluggish if latency spikes whenever a file is transferred. SpeedFox monitors ping stability during active transfer phases to detect excessive bufferbloat in your home router.

Connection Optimization

Is Your Internet Slower Than Expected?

Perform these 5 quick checks before contacting your internet service provider.

1

Reboot Hardware

Power off your modem and router for 30 seconds to flush temporary NAT tables and clear stale connection state.

2

Switch to 5 GHz / Cable

2.4 GHz Wi-Fi is crowded with interference. Connect to 5 GHz or plug in a Cat 6 Ethernet cable for instant speed gains.

3

Pause Background Apps

Steam updates, cloud backups (iCloud/Dropbox), and OS updates consume bandwidth silently in the background.

4

Update DNS Servers

ISP default DNS resolvers are often sluggish. Switch your device DNS to Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) or Google (8.8.8.8).

5

Test Peak Hours

If speeds drop between 7pm and 11pm, your neighborhood node may be congested. Keep a log of tests to present to your ISP.
