What is Ping and Jitter?
Why low latency and stable jitter matter more than raw download speed for online gaming, video calls, and other real-time traffic.
Bandwidth (Mbps) tells you how much data your connection can move. Latency tells you how fast a single piece of that data makes a round trip. For downloading a movie, bandwidth is what matters. For a competitive game, a video call, or a voice chat, latency — and how consistent it is — usually matters more than raw speed, even though it's the number most people pay the least attention to.
What Is Ping (Latency)?
Ping measures round-trip time: how long it takes a small packet of data to travel from your device to a server and back, expressed in milliseconds (ms). It's named after sonar "pinging" — send a signal, wait for the echo, measure the delay.
Ping is affected by:
- Physical distance — data in fiber travels near, but not at, the speed of light; more distance is more delay.
- Number of network hops — each router the data passes through adds a small amount of processing time.
- Routing efficiency — a poorly routed path can add real distance even between two nearby cities.
- Server response time — how quickly the destination itself replies.
What Is Jitter?
Jitter isn't the delay itself — it's the variation in that delay from one moment to the next. A connection with 40ms ping every single time has zero jitter. A connection that swings between 20ms and 120ms has high jitter, even if its average ping looks identical to the steady 40ms connection.
That inconsistency is often more disruptive than the average latency itself. Real-time audio and video need packets to arrive at a steady, predictable cadence to reconstruct a smooth stream. When jitter is high, the receiving app either buffers more data to compensate — adding its own delay — or packets arrive too late to use and get dropped, producing the choppy audio or frozen-frame video most people describe as "bad connection," even on a connection with plenty of bandwidth to spare.
